"The graduate program at Brown University's Department

defined tracks focusing on Epidemiology and Biostatistics

The Master of Science degree is designed to prepare
individuals for academic research or research/analytic
work in nonacademic settings related to a diverse
range of health service topics. The mission of
the Ph.D. program in Health Policy and Administration
is to advance multidisciplinary education and

Students complete a 30-credit curriculum including
a final project, most commonly a publishable thesis
or a practicum with a local health organization,
but other options such as a grant proposal or
project related to a student's current work (for
those in mid-career) are also possible. The project
must be defended before department faculty.
Core coursework is completed in the fall semester.
The spring is devoted to specialized coursework
in a student's chosen track and the completion
of the thesis or project.
While the curriculum can be completed in one
year, there are part-time options available which

Community Medicine is the academic discipline
that deals with the identification and solution
of health problems of communities or human populations.
It is a population-based discipline which addresses
certain aspects of all purposes of medicine: health
promotion, disease prevention, restoration of
health, relief of suffering, and the maintenance
of health while requiring a precise definition
of health problems and a specific commitment to
examine them and treat them in the full scope
of their implications. The range and scope of
the sciences and skills required in community
medicine include epidemiology, biostatistics,
experimental design, research methodology, and
an array of biomedical and behavioral sciences.
Central to the approach of community medicine
is the premise that the main factors that determine
a community's health are to be found within the
community itself; in its social, economic, cultural,
ethnic, and biological features; or in its environment,
natural and human. Therefore, the charge of the
Department of Community Medicine is to define
selected community problems, propose studies and
solutions, maintain surveillance, evaluate progress,
and monitor the use of resources.

The Programme has been designed to make available
to students the educational, research and clinical
resources of the Faculty of Health Sciences of
McMaster University. These resources are to be
found in the McMaster University Health Sciences
Centre, where most students are located, and the
teaching hospitals of Hamilton. These institutions
offer a wide range of laboratories, teaching,
and clinical facilities which can be used by students

Medical School. A Clinical Investigation Unit
is also available for research in the adjacent
Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. The hospital
serves the 100,000 children of Grampian Region
and the Northern Isles. Tertiary services provided
include oncology, haematology, gastroenterology,
diabetes and endocrinology, cystic fibrosis, respiratory
disease, neurology, perinatology and neonatology.
Cardiology and nephrology services are provided
in collaboration with centres in Edinburgh and
Glasgow.

120 credits are required in total of which 60
are research based as a strong emphasis is placed
on research. All students are required to complete
three 10-credit core modules: i) Research Methods
in Health, Education and Social Sciences;ii) Evaluating
Research; and, iii) The Practice of Research.
The MSc also requires completion of a 30-credit
final dissertation. The remaining 60 credits are
made up of six 10-credit option modules chosen
