This occupational hygiene program trains industrial
hygiene practitioners and researchers to recognize,
evaluate and controlenvironmental hazards in the workplace.
Industrial hygienists are environmental specialists
concerned with evaluation and control of the workplace
environment for exposure to potentially dangerous agents,
physical stresses, biologic agents and ergonomic effects.
They provide insight into these problems based on their
knowledge of the health effects of exposure to the substances
and physical agents involved and the physics and chemistry
of the environment. These specialists work as part of
interdisciplinary teams with epidemiologists, physicians,
nurses and toxicologists.

To reach the educational goal which will enable graduates
to esuccessfully develop, administer, and evaluate environmental
and occupational health programs, MPH students are trained
not only to recognize environmental and occupational
hazards and their effect on health but to assess their
social and economic impacts. Students also must be made
cognizant of both new and existing regulations which
affect the field at local, state, and national levels.
They further mustbecome acquainted with enforcement
procedures and processes in law and policy development.
A special project, field placement, and comprehensive
exam are required. Students weeking and MSPH specialize
in any of the environmental and occupational health
areas with an intense research and technical program
of study. This degree program focuses on preparing students
to fill leadership roles in solving or containing environmental
