The Integrated Biomedical Science Graduate Program
(IBGP) is the only college-wide graduate program
within the OSU College of Medicine and Public
Health. It was developed to provide both breadth
and depth of high quality training to prepare
its graduates for successful careers in biomedical
research. This is achieved through an efficient,
rigorous curriculum designed specifically for
graduate students in this program. The theme of
the IBGP is "The Biology of Human Disease," and
this is reflected in the topics of the Core Curriculum.
These topics span the range from biochemistry
and molecular biology through cell, tissue and
organ biology, to integrated organ systems. This
material is always presented so that the student
will understand how the complex interactions of
these mechanisms at different levels of organization
lead to the expression of human diseases. Less
extensive courses during the first year broaden
the basic educational training for the students.
These include Biomedical Ethics, Animal Models
of Human Diseases, Bioinformatics, Research Problem
Solving, and Biostatistics. The latter course
has several modules that can be combined in different
ways to meet the specific needs of individual
students.

of health care, a deep appreciation for the wisdom
of God in the face of bioethical challenges, and
some effective strategies for engaging the bioethical
issues of our day.
The MA in Bioethics is designed with various
groups of students in mind, including physicians

and pre-supposes implicit or explicit moral choices.
But ethical discourse is also an essential component
of social action and cultural institutions; no
human society is possible without some kind of
moral agreement which provides an essential condition
for social order and communication.
The courses in the Department of Ethics study
ethical questions in terms of individual, institutional,
and international relations. Analysis of the systematic
relations between ethics, religion, philosophy,
and politics are particularly emphasized. Courses
explore existing theories of ethics in the context
of a spiritual perspective informed by the principle
of the oneness of humanity. The department is
concerned with the application of spiritual principles
to contemporary ethical dilemmas in areas such
as business, science and technology, medicine,
family, law, human rights, the environment, and
international relations.
