The Integrated Biomedical Science Graduate Program (IBGP) is the only college-wide graduate program within the OSU College of Medicine and Public Health. It was developed to provide both breadth and depth of high quality training to prepare its graduates for successful careers in biomedical research. This is achieved through an efficient, rigorous curriculum designed specifically for graduate students in this program. The theme of the IBGP is "The Biology of Human Disease," and this is reflected in the topics of the Core Curriculum. These topics span the range from biochemistry and molecular biology through cell, tissue and organ biology, to integrated organ systems. This material is always presented so that the student will understand how the complex interactions of these mechanisms at different levels of organization lead to the expression of human diseases. Less extensive courses during the first year broaden the basic educational training for the students. These include Biomedical Ethics, Animal Models of Human Diseases, Bioinformatics, Research Problem Solving, and Biostatistics. The latter course has several modules that can be combined in different ways to meet the specific needs of individual students.

The program equips students to analyze these issues from a biblical-theological perspective, to understand other influential contemporary outlooks on these issues, and to develop special expertise in comparing biblical-theological and other approaches to particular issues. The program also seeks to provide students with a broad understanding of the changing face of health care, a deep appreciation for the wisdom of God in the face of bioethical challenges, and some effective strategies for engaging the bioethical issues of our day.

The MA in Bioethics is designed with various groups of students in mind, including physicians and medical students seeking to develop expertise in this challenging field, nurses and other health care workers, lawyers, those with political and public policy interests in pro-life and related areas, and individuals who are preparing for a career in related college or university teaching. The program is particularly well suited to those with heavy professional or other responsibilities who need a flexible 32 semester hour program with room for off-campus study and short-term intensive courses.

Ethics is a discipline concerned with the application of spiritual principles to the process and dynamics of life and society. Human action is always value-oriented and pre-supposes implicit or explicit moral choices. But ethical discourse is also an essential component of social action and cultural institutions; no human society is possible without some kind of moral agreement which provides an essential condition for social order and communication.

The courses in the Department of Ethics study ethical questions in terms of individual, institutional, and international relations. Analysis of the systematic relations between ethics, religion, philosophy, and politics are particularly emphasized. Courses explore existing theories of ethics in the context of a spiritual perspective informed by the principle of the oneness of humanity. The department is concerned with the application of spiritual principles to contemporary ethical dilemmas in areas such as business, science and technology, medicine, family, law, human rights, the environment, and international relations.
