The Albert Einstein College of Medicine was one
of the first institutions in the country to offer
the combined M.D.-Ph.D. degree. Students seeking
the combined degree arepart of Einstein's Medical
Scientist Training Program (MSTP), established
in 1964 withgrant support from the National Institutes
of Health. Einstein's MSTP is larger than mostothers
of its kind, enabling the program to have an administrative
and academic identity; it is still small enough,
however, to give it the key attribute of providing
individual attention to students and of meeting
their unique needs. It is one of the most establishedof
such programs in the country and has maintained
an excellent record of placing itsgraduates in
highly desirable post-graduate training positions
and in academic careers. The program is designed
to train students for research and teaching careers
either inpreclinical or clinical areas of medical
science.

The M.D./Ph.D. Program enables students to attain
both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees over a period
of six to nine years. The curriculum is flexible
and students are encouraged to shape their own
individualized course of study. Generally, however,
students take the basic medical science courses
offered for medical students during their first
two years in the Program. They also begin to gain
experience and insight into research during the
summer between years 1 and 2, and, if convenient,
before year 1. The next two to five years are
spent in study and research in one of the Division's
graduate programs completing the requirements
for the Ph.D. degree. Two years of clinical studies
follow to fulfill the requirements for the M.D.

medicine and/or biomedical research, the MD/PhD
program provides an ideal and time-efficient route
to training as both a physician and a scientist.
The program maximizes integrationbetween the medical
and graduate school curricula so that all requirements
can be satisfied within a minimal time-frame.
In recognition of the individual needs of each
student, the program has a flexible design, including
a special graduate program, Biomedical Sciences,
specifically for MD/PhD students. Some science
majors can qualify for exemption from certain
medical school courses and apply that time to
other areas of advanced study. In addition, the
summers before entering and after the first year
of medical school can be used for GSBS laboratory
rotations.

Our Graduate training program works in conjunction
with a number of degree-granting departments at
the University of Virginia, including Biomedical
Engineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Physiology
and Biological Physics, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology.
Separate application should be made to the graduate
director of the desired degree program. Upon acceptance
to a degree-granting department, the student can
be nominated for the Vascular Biology Training
Program by his or her faculty mentor. Graduate
students training in cardiovascular research can
be supported in PhD studies in one of these disciplines
while simultaneously completing a program of education
in vascular biology and cardiovascular research.
By combining the structure of departmental degree
requirements with a broad range of laboratory
experiences, investigator expertise, and technical
resources available at the University of Virginia,
the student is offered an ideal environment for
scientific study.

with the opportunity to study a basic biomedical
science in depth and to do advanced research in
some aspect of that subject while concurrently
pursuing studies leading to the medical degree.
This training develops the academic skills and
the laboratory techniques that are necessary for
an effective experimental approach to problems
in basic and clinical medical sciences. The program
is designed for students aspiring careers in academic
medicine and medical research.
