The Albert Einstein College of Medicine was one of the first institutions in the country to offer the combined M.D.-Ph.D. degree. Students seeking the combined degree arepart of Einstein's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), established in 1964 withgrant support from the National Institutes of Health. Einstein's MSTP is larger than mostothers of its kind, enabling the program to have an administrative and academic identity; it is still small enough, however, to give it the key attribute of providing individual attention to students and of meeting their unique needs. It is one of the most establishedof such programs in the country and has maintained an excellent record of placing itsgraduates in highly desirable post-graduate training positions and in academic careers. The program is designed to train students for research and teaching careers either inpreclinical or clinical areas of medical science.

The M.D./Ph.D. Program enables students to attain both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees over a period of six to nine years. The curriculum is flexible and students are encouraged to shape their own individualized course of study. Generally, however, students take the basic medical science courses offered for medical students during their first two years in the Program. They also begin to gain experience and insight into research during the summer between years 1 and 2, and, if convenient, before year 1. The next two to five years are spent in study and research in one of the Division's graduate programs completing the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Two years of clinical studies follow to fulfill the requirements for the M.D. degree
