Advances in biology depend on multidisciplinary approaches,
in which knowledge and technology from diverse areas
intersect to inspire new discoveries. Today, however,
the breadth of accumulated knowledge about biology is
immense裦ar more extensive than any individual can assimilate.
Thus, our curriculum has been designed to train self-reliant
students who, under their own guidance, can acquire
and assimilate the knowledge their research or career
demands require.
Degrees Offered:
Ph.D.

The Graduate School of Biological Sciences is an integral
part of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, administering
a course of study toward the PhD degree in biomedical
sciences. All the required courses and electives and
the research faculty are located on the campus of the
Mount Sinai School of Medicine. With the growth in multidisciplinary
efforts, overlap between old fields, development of
whole new fields, and an enormous opportunity for applying
fundamental knowledge to important biomedical problems,
we seek to offer each student a wealth of options in
developing the optimal program of pre-doctoral training
for his/her individual goals.
Degrees Offered:
Ph.D.;
M.D./Ph.D.
Research Areas:biochemistry, biomathematical sciences,
cancer biology, cellular and molecular biological sciences,
cell biology/anatomy, human genetics, gene therapy,
immunobiology, developmental biology, molecular pharmacology,
environmental medicine, microbiology, virology, systems

The purpose of the developmental genetics program is
to offer research opportunities in the areas of developmental
biology with a special focus on molecular and genetic
approaches. Students have the opportunity to carry out
research with investigators working with a variety of
organisms, including Drosophila, C. elegans, Xenopus,
Arabidopsis, mouse, chicken, and zebrafish. The research
program allows the study of diverse developmental processes
such as pattern formation, cell determination, cell
lineage, and cell-cell interactions. A unique feature
of this program is that it brings together investigators
from NYU School of Medicine and NYU Biology Department
to provide a comprehensive program focused on developmental
genetics.
Degrees Offered:
Ph.D;
MD/Ph.D.
