Cross-college collaboration is a unique strength
of Michigan State that is built into the organizational
structure of the university; this strength is
particularly evident at the graduate education
level. For example, the biomedical science departments
that serve all three colleges of medicine -- veterinary,
allopathic, and osteopathic -- have a larger pool
of resources, a more diverse student population,
and more cutting-edge research than many of their
counterparts at other universities.

Veterinary medical practice is changing, and
many specialties are emerging, in addition to
traditional farm animal practice. Yet each relies
heavily upon a common core of basic scientific
knowledge and intellectual skills required for
effectively understanding health and disease as
they occur in animals. To accommodate these considerations,
the curriculum consists of core and elective courses.
For individual students, the blend of core and
elective courses constitutes a continuum of development
in the areas of veterinary medicine they have
selected for their careers.

The MU College of Veterinary Medicine has some
unique advantages compared to most other colleges
of veterinary medicine. It is located in a major
agricultural state with a large livestock industry.
The opportunities for collaborative study in agriculture
and comparative medicine are wide. For example,
MU is one of a minority of veterinary medical
colleges on the same campus as a medical college.
The proximity and size of the MU Animal Science
Department has resulted in many collaborative
projects. Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center
and the MU Nuclear Reactor are facilities which
give MU investigators unique opportunities for
many types of research. Washington University,
St. Louis University, and Lincoln University have
provided additional opportunities for collaborative
research or instructional grants.
