Epidemiology comprises the research methods which identify and isolate the underlying causes of disease and injury. The epidemiologist plays a key role in conducting studies of the distribution and determinants of health anddisease in populations; monitors diseases and studies the possible causes of change in disease occurrence, thusgiving clues as to how to prevent or diminish disease. The findings that smoking causes lung cancer, certain dietspromote coronary heart disease, certain lifestyles promote AIDS and many other relationships are the result of intensive epidemiologic research. Other areas of work can be found in the clinical setting where epidemiologists help evaluate the effects of different treatments or procedures.

Human health and the integrity of the natural environment are interdependent. More now than ever, challenges in public health and the environment must be faced using knowledge both from the social and natural sciences. The graduate program in Environmental Health Science and Policy (EHSP) is rooted in existing disciplines, but emphasizes an emerging common base of knowledge that spans both the social and natural sciences. To optimize flexibility, including options for primary emphasis on laboratory and field work the curriculum is organized around four concentrations: Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Health Science, Environmental Management and Policy, and Epidemiology and Public Health

Epidemiology is the study of diseases from a population-based perspective; it involves the factors affecting disease reates and the distribution of disease and disabilities in populations. As a fundamental science of preventive medicine and public health, epidemiologic research has traditionally focused on questions of disease causation through population studies for both infectious and chronic diseases. The range of topics now addressed by epidemiologic methods includes health promotion, disease prevention, and assessing the quality of health care. Quantitative skills, including Biostatistics and computer applications, are emphasized in all degree programs. Knowledge of college level algebra is required for all biostatistics courses. Basic computer knowledge is required.

Students complete a 30-credit curriculum including a final project, most commonly a publishable thesis or a practicum with a local health organization, but other options such as a grant proposal or project related to a student's current work (for those in mid-career) are also possible. The project must be defended before department faculty.

Core coursework is completed in the fall semester. The spring is devoted to specialized coursework in a student's chosen track and the completion of the thesis or project.

While the curriculum can be completed in one year, there are part-time options available which can span two or more years. Contact the Program Coordinator for details.
