The Graduate Program in Psychology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has one of the country's largest contributing faculties, drawing on the fifty members of the psychology department and over fifty scientists from other Rutgers departments, from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School-University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, from the Rutgers' Center of Alcohol Studies, the Rutger s Center for Cognitive Science, the Laboratory of Vision Research, and from neighboring pharmaceutical companies and high-tech industries. This large faculty permits students wide latitude in planning a course of study; they may prepare for a traditi onal career in teaching or research, or for new opportunities in business and industry.

The program offers four areas of specialization, although several interests may be integrated in a particular course of study:

    Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience

    Clinical

    Cognitive

    Social

In addition, two interdisciplinary programs are offered:

As scientific research has become more and more multidisciplinary, the nature of most graduate training programs has become more and more specialized. To combat this trend towards over-specialization, Rutgers-Newark has initiated a multidisciplinary training program in Cellular and Molecular Biodynamics. This program, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, draws together faculty from the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry,, Physics and Center and Molecular Neuoscience. Each department has both a strong independent research program and a dedication to graduate research training. The participating faculty all have in common an active research interest in the physical mechanisms underlying various biological phenomena, complementary technical and/or methodological approaches, and most importantly, the proven ability to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and levels in pursuit of research interests. The goal of the program is to train students in research techniques, methodologies and issues that are outside the range of typical programs in any single discipline such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Neuroscience.
